Penguin Random House is seeking an accomplished and versatile Assistant Design Director to manage the interior designs for multiple trade paperback/hardcover imprints in the Penguin division of Penguin Random House.

The Assistant Design Director will oversee a diverse list of approximately 100 titles/year, with an emphasis on 1-color non-fiction and highly-designed, 2- and 4-color titles. This position will generate original interior designs and supervise in-house and freelance designers. The Assistant Design Director should be a seasoned designer, adept at designing across a range of genres and formats, with a proven ability to manage multiple projects and staff under tight deadlines while maintaining high standards.

Responsibilities:

• Create original designs—includes generating samples, reviewing final transmitted manuscripts, preparing typesetting instructions for compositor, and reviewing passes.

• Supervise and art direct in-house designers.

• Hire and art direct freelance interior designers and illustrators.

• Attend weekly status meetings and relay pertinent information to the Design Director and Designers.

• Monitor schedules with Managing Editorial and Production Departments to ensure timely execution and follow through from manuscript to bound book.

• Meet with Editors and Publishers to discuss design concepts and present designs for approval.

• Evaluate seasonal lists and with the input of the Design Director, assign individual titles to the appropriate in-house or freelance designer.

• Review and provide feedback on application files and art submitted by authors and packagers.

Skills:

• Minimum 10 years of experience in interior trade book design

• Strong portfolio demonstrating ability to design across imprints and genres, including examples of 4-color design

• Expertise with Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, Bridge)

• An understanding of prepress and production technology for 1-color, 2-color, and 4-color printing

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Experience mentoring staff with ability to foster an environment that encourages team work in small groups

• Ability to prioritize, multitask, and meet deadlines

• Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel and FileMaker Pro a plus
